You Choose Your KTU Path

We've built multiple options into our programs. Students earn credits through industry certifications and through self lead courses. Its possible to focus on certifications and graduate quicker if that suits you or if you prefer learning in a more incremental way you can focus on self lead courses.

You'll also have the opportunity to choose if you want to complete a Capstone project worth 12 credits or if you'd rather focus on more certifications and courses. The choice is yours, all we require is that you receive permission from the Office of the Provost for your Degree Plan.

Degree Plans are completed during orientation and serve as a road map to your goal, be it a certificate or a degree.

IT or CS?

The two most distinct paths you’re likely to encounter through KTU are Information Technology and Computer Science. KTU is more Information Technology focused.  Technology is in our name after all.

It’s easy to confuse the two, but each of these disciplines demands a different set of skills and a different kind of attitude.
At a glance, IT (information technology) careers are more about installing, maintaining, and improving computer systems, operating networks, and databases.

Meanwhile, computer science is about using mathematics to program systems to run more efficiently, including in design and development.
While computer science education isn’t necessary for an IT career, some IT education is fundamental for a computer science degree that later leads to job opportunities. IT can be specialized in many different ways, but CS graduates have opportunities immediately available to them that IT qualified workers don’t.

The work environments expected from both careers can vary widely, too. Most IT professionals work as part of a team in an organization, serving internal needs or working directly with clients. Computer scientists, however, work in businesses, colleges, video game development companies, or as freelancers. Regardless of which appeals more, there’s plenty of potential for career growth and lucrative job opportunities in both fields.

Information Technology

Expert-designed programs—certifications included.

Solving problems and designing solutions is your calling. To advance your career, employers expect you to prove your skills and show what you've got. That's the same way you earn a degree at KTU. By including certification prep and exams into your coursework (covered by your tuition), our programs offer a smarter bundle, tailored to today's IT industry’s requirements.

Completing a Degree Plan is required during orientation and approval of your plan must be completed by the Provost prior to students beginning their IT program courses.

Computer Science

Computer science is the study of computation and information. Computer science deals with theory of computation, algorithms, computational problems and the design of computer systems hardware, software and applications.

Computer Science is less interested in applying the technical tools to our everyday life and more focused on the code and programing of a computer application.

KTU does not offer a degree program in computer science at this time. While we offer courses that cover aspects of CS we are more practical about the use of technology.

Program Certificates

All of our programs offer multiple specialized technical certifications.

These industry recognized certifications can be completed usually in one course, like the CompTIA ITF+ certification, or in a combination of courses such as CompTIA Network+ certification.

KTU offers its own certification tracks in addition to the industry certifications built into our courses. These certifications help summarize the collection of course material a student has completed. KTU certifications can be milestones towards an Associate of Science degree at KTU. Different KTU certifications require different courses but all generally are composed of 12 to 21 credit hours.

Speak with your Academic Mentor or schedule a meeting with the Provost to discuss KTU Certifications. KTU IT Certifications include:

Web Design Certificate
Technology Security Certificate
Search Engine Optimization Certificate
Search Engine Marketing Certificate
Social Media Marketing Certificate
Social Media Optimization Certificate

You'll notice many have to do with Digital Marketing. Our university was started by a digital marketing agency called Ultimate SEO LLC. The meeting of business and technology is inevitable in today's careers and we incorporate this in our certificate programs. These programs are excellent continuing education opportunities for students who may have a degree already in business but need more technology exposure or vice versa for the technology person who needs to understand the business aspects in order to advance their career.
